Before your appointment

When should I see an orthopaedic surgeon?

Joint pain lasting longer than two weeks, swelling, restricted movement, a feeling of the joint giving way while walking, pain that wakes you at night, or being unable to bear weight after an injury are all reasons to be assessed. Early evaluation often means simpler treatment, because a problem caught before the joint surface is damaged can usually be managed without surgery.

Is surgery always necessary, or can my problem be treated without it?

Most orthopaedic complaints can be managed with medication, exercise, physiotherapy and injections into the joint. Surgery becomes the right option when those measures no longer control the pain, when pain limits daily life, or when there is a structural problem — a torn ligament, a displaced fracture, a badly worn joint surface — that will not heal on its own. The decision is made together, after examination and imaging.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Any previous X-ray, MRI or CT images, a list of the medication you take, and reports about other conditions you are being treated for. It also helps to be able to say when the complaint started, what makes it worse, and which activities it prevents. Bringing the actual images rather than only the written report is useful, because the images often carry information the report does not.

How long does recovery take after surgery?

It depends on the procedure, your age, your muscle strength before surgery, and how closely you follow the rehabilitation programme. Return to daily life is faster after arthroscopic procedures and more gradual after joint replacement or ligament reconstruction. You will be given a written schedule for your own operation, showing what you may do in each period.

I would like a second opinion. Is that appropriate?

Of course. Asking for a second assessment is a patient's right and common practice, particularly for decisions with permanent consequences such as joint replacement or ligament surgery. Bringing your existing imaging with you makes the second assessment more useful, because the same images can be compared rather than repeated.
